THE SKY’S THE LIMIT: HARRIS ACADEMY WIMBLEDON AWARDED PRESTIGIOUS CHALLENGE AWARD

Harris Academy Wimbledon has been accredited with the prestigious Challenge Award by the National Association for Able Children in Education (NACE) for its programme of support for its more able students. The Academy is one of just 26 schools across London to have achieved this accreditation.

Following an assessment of Harris Academy Wimbledon in January, NACE Assessors have praised how the Academy supports its more able students to achieve their full potential. Assessors visited lessons across all years in a range of subjects, seeing how the Academy ensures that “all students are challenged whilst being provided with a wide variety of opportunities to excel.” The quality of teaching at the Academy was a strong focus of the NACE report, from the “excellent subject knowledge and clear passion” which teachers demonstrate, to the skilful use of questioning to “engage and stretch more able learners.” For students in the Sixth Form, the assessors commended the careers guidance available, particularly the Academy’s informative careers fairs, which helps more able students feel better prepared for their next steps.

Assessors also praised the wider opportunities on offer for the Academy’s more able students through its range of academic extracurricular activities – from the Scholars Society to the Maths Circle and History Explorers. The Academy also maintains a close partnership with King’s College School (KCS), Wimbledon, allowing students to engage in KCS’s extracurricular activities and events. This includes joint university preparation activities, which have helped Harris Academy Wimbledon’s sixth formers go on to study at prestigious Russell Group universities, including Oxbridge.

Jo Larizadeh, Principal of Harris Academy Wimbledon, said:

“We are delighted to have received the Challenge Award from NACE, recognising the breadth and quality of provision on offer at Harris Academy Wimbledon. It was a pleasure to host a NACE Assessor at our Academy to show how we enable our students to flourish. Through activities both inside the classroom and beyond, our students are given the tools they need to explore their interests and achieve at the highest level.

“All students at Harris Academy Wimbledon benefit from the aspirational and supportive culture we foster which encourages them all to achieve highly. I am very proud of all our students who work so hard to fulfil their goals and of our excellent teaching staff who support them to do so.”
