Sports at HAWI
Harris Academy Wimbledon upholds a sporting ethos of Participation and Excellence. Our well-sequenced and spiralled Physical Education curriculum provides a solid foundation for access to sport, enhanced by a comprehensive extracurricular program. Sport is held in high regard at the Academy, forming a vital part of each pupil's holistic development. By offering high-quality sports opportunities, we ensure exceptionally high participation rates across all year groups.
Students have access to a wide range of sporting activities before school, during lunch, and after school. Our goal is to foster a lifelong love of sport, helping students discover the “sport they love.” Through our clubs, students can represent the Academy across a full spectrum of sports, at all levels and age groups, competing in school fixtures as well as borough, regional, and national competitions.
Our main team sports in the Autumn and Spring terms are football, basketball, and netball, while the summer term focuses on athletics, tennis, and cricket. In partnership with the Merton School Sport Partnership, students participate in numerous London Youth Games competitions, including basketball, cross-country, handball, badminton, and table tennis. Harris Academy Wimbledon hosts annual events like the swimming gala, internal competitions, and sports day, which bring the HAWI community together, celebrating excellence, teamwork, and school spirit. Competition is integral to HAWI's ethos, offering students in Years 7 to 13 the chance to compete in lessons, house competitions, and external fixtures.
To ensure high-quality sports provision that meets the needs of all students, we invest in specialist coaches to support our sports teams. In addition, we have partnerships with local organizations such as AJ Cricket, Stronger Fitness, Royal Academy of Dance providing unique experiences, including Mixed Martial Arts.
Our students enjoy access to excellent facilities, including multiple sports pitches at Nursery Playing Fields, a modern indoor sports hall with six basketball hoops, a trampoline rig, cricket nets, a floodlit 3G artificial pitch for football and hockey, and a sprung-floor dance studio. The Academy also has access to artificial and grass cricket square, four tennis courts, and athletics track in the summer. We are fully committed to providing and maintaining top-class facilities to support the development and participation in a broad range of sports. With these resources, we have achieved significant success in borough and federation-level competitions in football, netball, and athletics, and we are confident in striving for even greater achievements at county and regional levels.
The Academy also identifies subject scholars—students who demonstrate exceptional sporting potential. Each year, outstanding student achievements are celebrated at the Annual Sports Awards Dinner, where students’ names are proudly etched on school sports plaques, leaving a legacy for future generations.
Our motivated Physical Education teachers, combined with many expert external coaches, create a successful, progressive, and inclusive sporting environment that inspires all our pupils.
