Sports at Harris Academy Wimbledon

Harris Academy Wimbledon has a sporting ethos of ‘Participation and Excellence’. A well sequenced and spiralled Physical Education curriculum form the starting blocks for access to sport, coupled with an extensive extracurricular programme. Sport at the Academy is held in very high regard and it is an integral part of a pupil's holistic development. We ensure to offer a high standard of sport, which in return guarantees the exceptionally high participation rates across all year groups.

The students have access to a wide range of sporting activities which take place before school, at lunchtime and after-school.  The aim is to foster a lifelong love of sport and enable students to find that ‘sport they love’.  Through our club’s students will have the opportunity to represent the Academy across a complete range of sports, at all levels and age groups, through an extensive school fixture list as well as borough, regional and national competitions.

Football and netball are the major team sport representation in the Autumn and Spring terms whilst Athletics, tennis and cricket are the main options for the Summer term.

Working with the local Merton School Sport Partnership students are given the opportunity to participate in a comprehensive amount of London Youth Games competitions. Basketball, cross-country, handball, badminton, and table-tennis are some of the other competitive team sports available.

In 2021 we have secured a partnership with Sponte Sua Gymnastic a well-recognised local gymnastics school. This is an excellent opportunity to inspire and gain the interest of students for gymnastics. Students will get the chance to use specialised equipment, such as, uneven bars, beams, and vaults. The students will receive a high level of coaching through school extracurricular clubs and be able demonstrate their ability through competitions and performances.

Students have access to an excellent range of facilities. The facilities include multiple sports pitches at Nursery Playing Fields, modern indoor sports hall, fitted with 6 basketball hoops a trampoline rig and cricket nets, artificial floodlit 3G multi use games area- fit for football and hockey, a sprung floor dance studio. The Academy also has access to an artificial cricket square, grass cricket square, 4 tennis courts and in the summer athletics track all at Nursery Playing Fields. The School is fully committed to providing and maintaining top-class facilities for the development of and participation in a wide range of sports. We have had success both within the borough and across the federation in football, netball and athletics. We believe with our new facilities we can strive on and have greater success at county and regional competitions.

The Academy identifies subject scholars, students who are demonstrating excellent sporting potential. From this, students are invited to attend The Sporting Stars Mentoring Programme which is run by enthusiastic, motivated and experienced staff and helps aspiring young athletes fulfil their potential.

Highly motivated Physical Education teachers coupled with many external coaching experts, form the heart of what is a very successful, progressive and indeed inclusive sporting environment for our pupils.
