We have had a brilliant half term and it has culminated in an excellent last week. On Wednesday, we had our Black History Month celebration day and Chartwells provided a great lunch of jerk chicken, jollof rice and corn bread. We were entertained by students from across the year groups performing songs by black artists as well a mix of traditional West African music with the djembe drums.
We have also had our deep learning days. Year 9 spent one day working with the charity First Give. They spent time exploring different social issues and causes that they are passionate about, and then prepared and delivered presentations about these. Each class voted for a social issue and charity that they are going to raise awareness, fundraise and volunteer for this year. This programme is also supporting the students with their volunteering to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh award. Year 9 are at Bletchley Park today delving into the Allied code-breaking from the Second World War. Year 7 enjoyed their walk along the River Wandle where they explored the impacts humans are having along the Wandle Trail through a number of geographical fieldwork techniques. Year 8 have been immersing themselves in Maths and Year 10s have been focusing on different GCSE subjects.
We have welcomed a number of visitors to the academy over the last few weeks and they have all commented on how polite, friendly and hard working the students are. I am very proud of the HAWI student; they are kind, considerate and have a great sense of fun.
Have a relaxing and enjoyable half term,
Mrs Larizadeh
